Cobra S2 Irons -- Holding their own in a highly engineered world

CARLSBAD, CA – “We live in a highly engineered world, and many of the advancements in other fields in terms of materials and manufacturing processes trickle down into the golf industry,” remarked Cobra Golf’s Principal Design Engineer Ryan Roach, commenting on how ever-evolving scientific technologies translate to today’s high-tech golf equipment.

Roach was talking specifically of his company’s latest irons offerings, the S2 line, which is indeed highly engineered, incorporating multiple materials in the clubhead to allow for efficient weight distribution in order to enhance the club’s performance aspects – all in an attempt to make the game a little more manageable for players who could probably use some help from their equipment.

“Cobra has been at the forefront of taking advantage of such advances,” Roach continued. “The multi-material technology that we incorporate into our products is a direct result of these advances. The premise of multi-material technology is to take advantage of the unique properties of each material used in a clubhead design in order to improve it – be it more forgiveness, greater distance, better sound, etc… -- and these can all be achieved over merely using a single material.”

It’s true, it seems all of the major golf equipment manufacturers these days are mixing and matching their materials to design the optimum weighted golf clubs, aided by computer software programs that would make Luke Skywalker proud – an endless quest for the mythical ‘best’ weight combination that keeps folks like Roach busy a great deal of the time.

Roach says Cobra’s S2 line is superior to everything the company’s produced in the past, simply because it performs better. “We’ve refined our patented polymer topline technology to maintain the forgiveness that it produces while providing a more seamless integration of this technology into the clubhead (practically speaking, the polymer topline is now only visible in the scoring area at address, and they’ve moved the polymer toe insert out of view – these adjustments allow for 12-14 grams of discretionary weight to be moved low in the heel and toe).

There’s more: “As with our previous multi-material offerings, we’ve incorporated a urethane insert into the sole portion of the cavity, which moves weight to the perimeter and also dampens vibration,” Roach elaborated.

Other improvements in the S2 include an adjusted face profile, a stepped sole design, shorter blade length and a revised cavity shape – which all work to provide a more traditional iron appearance that maintains (due to the multi-material technology) the same amount of forgiveness and more distance than Cobra’s past models.

The S2 represents a victory for traditionalists who don’t favor the strange looking big-headed game improvement irons so commonly seen these days. I count myself in that group. And because of the other performance characteristics built into the S2 (distance, forgiveness and feel), it will appeal to the largest range of golfers – according to Roach, it’s suitable for 6+ handicappers who are looking to maximize distance and forgiveness without compromising on feel at impact.

Note: The S2 is complemented on both ends of the playability spectrum by the S2 Forged model (for better players) and the S2 Max model (for the super game improvement category).

All in all, multi-material ‘mixing’ is a long way from the early times where you’d take a billet of steel and just pound out a clubhead. Bobby Jones might not recognize the multi-material golf clubs these days, but they’re definitely here to stay – progress wouldn’t allow for anything else.

“Composites, plastics, nano-materials, steel superalloys – all of these have their place in golf alongside traditional materials like steel and titanium because they have unique properties (density, hardness, strength-to-weight ratio, etc.) that can make golf clubs better,” Roach added.

In the end, it’s all about being able to move weight around in designing the clubhead. Again, Roach explains: “Instead of making the S2 out of 100% steel, we replaced areas where we don’t need the steel (and where steel actually puts the design at a disadvantage) with a highly engineered material such as Nylon 6-6, and take advantage of the much lighter weight of the nylon versus steel to lower the clubhead’s center of gravity.”

Cobra then incorporates a soft urethane insert low in the center of the cavity – essentially displacing the extra mass to the heel and toe to increase moment of inertia (MOI, which is extremely important in golf clubs) while simultaneously dampening vibrations, which improves feel.

Finally, an aluminum back plate is attached to the back of the face in the S2’s, which provides a much richer aesthetic than could be achieved out of cast steel. Vibration dampening tape is also used to attach the plate – which further enhances feel at impact.

It doesn’t matter how well a golf club is designed and manufactured if it doesn’t ‘fit’ your swing, however. Here too, Roach provides some advice: “When looking for new irons, a golfer should be honest with his or her ability. A good player will probably be able to get good results with all types of clubs – and thus this purchase will be more based on personal preference of look and feel.”

Roach continues, “A beginning or less advanced golfer on the other hand, should stay in the super game improvement or game improvement areas. Cobra also makes specific women’s and seniors’ models of the S2 and S2 Max product that caters to these players.”

Roach thinks in general, golfers should probably err towards a more forgiving set (which means, lower center of gravity and wider soled clubs, which help to get the ball in the air) when choosing irons – and if hybrids don’t already have a place in your bag, you should look for a set that includes them, or even buy them separately to replace your long irons.

For short irons, it’s important to make sure there aren’t large distance gaps between clubs, especially between the pitching wedge and sand wedge. If that’s the case, a gap wedge would be helpful to account for the difference.

Of course, Roach believes it’s beneficial to be fit by a trained and unbiased professional – and also testing the clubs outdoors on grass is something everyone should do before spending good money on a new set.

The Cobra S2 Max

One final bit of caution in the fitting realm: “Golfers tend to think they’re better than they are – which is why clubs like the S2 and S2 Forged are great because they provide tremendous amounts of forgiveness and distance in packages that scream ‘performance’ rather than ‘forgiveness,’” Roach lectured.

I found the S2 irons to be fairly easy to play once I adjusted to their looks – which although are more traditional than some others in the game improvement category, are still a bit of a departure in aesthetics from the forged blades that I grew up with, primarily because of a thicker top-line. The heads are also a fair amount larger (at least in appearance) than a blade – which instills a sense of confidence, but also required a period of time to get used to.

The S2’s wider soles made it very easy to pick the ball off the turf, which I really liked – good for those of us who don’t take large divots, but I’d also imagine that they glide through the grass rather easily for players who prefer to take some turf.

The most striking difference between the S2’s and other iron sets was the distance with each iron – greater in the S2’s than I’ve seen in the past, about one club stronger per iron. The set does not contain a 3-iron, but I was hitting the S2 4-iron over 200 yards, essentially replacing the situations where I’d hit a 3-iron. The S2’s gap wedge also was a consistent 110 yards, which filled the void nicely between the pitching wedge and my 56 degree sand wedge.

The S2’s also have a nice sound to them, and I had no trouble whatsoever getting a high ball flight from them.

The Cobra S2 Forged

As with all products that we look at, we’d recommend that you give them a try after consulting with your professional club-fitter, especially if you’re looking for an iron with a high-tech appearance in the game improvement category.

The S2 iron certainly fits in the ‘highly engineered world’ that Roach described above – and he says they’ll keep trying to make equipment that performs even better. “In golf, distance is king, no doubt about it. The great arms race amongst golf club companies is constantly being waged – and we’re not about to back away from it.”

“But we believe in smarter distance – distance with a purpose – distance that helps a golfer play the game,” Roach went on. “The technology we’ve developed has that practical purpose – because of advancements like the patented polymer top-line and other multi-material incorporation we are able to lower the clubhead’s center of gravity, which allows us to maintain a nice high playable trajectory despite strengthening the lofts for more distance. And it’s distance due to more carry, not just more roll.”

Is there ever a limit to where technology can take us? If there is, Roach isn’t thinking about it.

“While it seems golf companies are getting boxed in by rules and regulations, there’s always room for the creative application of innovation,” Roach added thoughtfully. “Golf is a hard game to play. As long as we’re in business we will always be striving to create a better product to help golfers play better and enjoy the game more. The mantra moving forward may well be ‘innovate or go out of business.’

If the company continues to produce products like the S2 irons, you can be sure Cobra will be right up there with top innovators in golf for a long time to come.
